Photography Adventure Tour during the Sydney Hobart Yacht Race
Join me on an amazing Photography Adventure Tour aboard the 20-metre expedition vessel Odalisque, photographing the racing yachts competing in the 2019 Sydney Hobart Yacht Race set against Tasmania’s towering sea cliffs.
The tour will include a cruise from the port of Hobart across Storm Bay to Tasman Island for sunset shots, anchoring overnight in Port Arthur or Fortesque Bay with gourmet Tasmanian food and drinks, a dawn shoot around the Tasman Island sea cliffs, before a return cruise to Hobart.
I have teamed up with Tasmanian Boat Charters and their expedition vessel Odalisque for this unique photography adventure tour. The Odalisque was designed to voyage to Port Davey in the Tasmania’s wild and remote South West, she offers superb comfort and at 20-metres in length is a fantastic platform for photography in all weather conditions.

Photography Adventure Tour | Sydney Hobart Yacht Race 2019 | Itinerary
Day 1: Depart Hobart for Cape Raoul and Tasman Island Highlights: We’ll cruise down the Derwent River to the Iron Pot before crossing Storm Bay to Cape Raoul and Tasman Island, chasing race competitors as we go. Once the light has dropped and cameras are stowed we’ll steam into Port Arthur or Fortesque Bay for a calm night at anchor reviewing our imagery and enjoying a glass or two of Tassie’s finest.
Day 2: Sunrise seacliffs and racing yachts Highlights: We’ll pull the anchor before dawn, check the yacht tracker and once again make our way to either Tasman Island or Cape Raoul, before returning to Hobart late that morning snapping off more competitors along the way.

Includes 24 hours onboard the Odalisque including one night accommodation, passage to Tasman Island and Cape Raoul (starting & finishing Hobart), all meals and soft drink from afternoon tea Day 1 to morning tea Day 2. *A fully stocked bar of Tasmanian wines, beer and spirits available at bar prices. Post processing session will be scheduled at anchor on day 1. Participants will need to make their own way to/from Hobart.
What to Bring
- Camera, memory card and accessories. Telephoto lens of 200mm or longer recommended. Don’t forget chargers and spare batteries/memory cards!
- Laptop and power pack. Memory card reader
- Wet weather gear (for yourself and for your camera). Warm clothing for the sunrise/sunset shoots.
- Comfortable shoes with good grip.
- A full list of suggested items will be forwarded to you shortly before workshop commences.
Sunset is approx 20:50 and sunrise is approx 5:35 in October. On day 1 we may decide to head into sheltered waters for dinner and then return to the cliffs for sunset, we’ll assess this on the day. Day 2 will be a very early start and again we may decide to head back into Port Arthur/Fortesque Bay for breakfast before returning to Hobart. Make sure you you bring clothes for all weather as it could be rough and cold, or warm and windy, cool and calm.
Captain Piet will deem where it is we are safe to go, however as we are heading out into unsheltered waters this cruise is for those in good physical condition and able bodied. Whilst our vessel is designed for expeditions, it will still be effected by the wind and swell conditions. If you are prone to sea sickness then please talk to me before reserving a place on the boat, the last thing I want is for guests to be laid up in a bunk because they are unwell.

This region can present any type of weather at any time of year. Please check the the BOM Marine Forecast carefully before the tour departs and bring windproof and waterproof gear (jacket and pants), as well as lots of warm clothing including thermal layers and a down jacket.
