Tasmania is not a place that typically springs to mind when talking about cultural diversity. But what if you were told that as many as 177 different nationalities are represented in Tasmania’s population?
And what if someone set out to find every one of those nationalities and record their stories?
177 Nations of Tasmania is the result of that journey — a collection of portraits and stories featuring people from over 130 different nations who have made Tasmania their home.
These personal accounts span continents and generations: from being sent alone at 15 to Australia, unable to speak English, to falling for a Tasmanian ranger protecting snow leopards in Kyrgyzstan, to a Panamanian ballet instructor raising a newborn in a new country.
177 Nations of Tasmania encapsulates the breadth of the migrant experience—stories of determination and resilience, joy and sorrow—and paints a portrait of a contemporary Tasmania far more diverse, connected and extraordinary than most of us ever imagined.
