What a magic day. Storm Bay, Sea Cliffs, Golden Light and yachts, yachts, yachts.
We left the Derwent Sailing Squadron Marina at 4.30pm heading south down the River Derwent to Storm Bay. A strong sea breeze was in, but our vessel the Odilesque carved through the small swell with ease making 15 knots.
In Storm Bay proper we found our first Sydney Hobart competitor under kite, the majestic Winning Appliances. Followed by Hollywood Boulevard and Ichi Ban, who at the time was leading the race on handicap! It was amazing to be so close to the yachts in such a stunning backdrop, with plenty of changing from zooms to wide angles.
Halfway through the cruise we’d made it as far as Shipsterns Bluff and given there were no yachts around the corner at Tasman Island we turned around and caught up to each yacht on the way back across Storm Bay before reaching the Iron Pot.
The whole experience was fantastic and next year I’m investigating an overnight trip where we leave Hobart and cruise to Port Arthur, anchor there before getting up early to photograph more boats around Tasman and then all the way back to Hobart.

Big thanks to the great group of 9 who came along, and to Skipper Matthew.
